Castlebar Town Council has responsibility for the administration of the town of
Castlebar Town Council as a local authority plays both a representational and operational role. There are 9 Elected Members to Castlebar Town Council. These members were elected in June 2004. In accordance with the Local Government Act 2001 elections take place every 5 years.
The functions performed by the elected members are called "reserved functions". These lay down the framework of policy under which the manager operates.
Such functions include:
- Adoption of Annual Budget
- Making or varying the Development Plan
- Adoption of Scheme of Letting priorities of Local Authority Houses
- Making, amending and revoking bye-laws
- Approval for borrowing money
- Civic Receptions and Town Twinning
The Manager, in making his decisions, must act in a way that is consistent with the policy, which has been established by the elected members while, at the same time, advising the members in relation to the performance of their reserved functions.
